A mens half placket shirt only opens partway down the chest and is pulled on over the head, while a full button shirt opens completely. The shorter placket is what gives a popover its more casual, effortless feel.

Check the fabric, cotton is a good place to begin; recycled cotton, even better. Then look at the fit. A popover should have a little more room through the body. That slight looseness is what gives it its louche, slightly dishevelled look, in the best possible way.
