The Origins of Recycled Nylon
Nylon, a synthetic polymer known for its versatility and durability, has a rich history dating back to the 1930s. It was first developed by a team of researchers at DuPont, led by Wallace Carothers, who were exploring synthetic fibres. In 1935, they successfully created the first nylon, which was initially used to make toothbrush bristles and women's stockings. During World War II, nylon played a crucial role in the production of parachutes, ropes, and other military equipment, further establishing its importance. Over the decades, nylon has evolved and found applications in various industries, including fashion, automotive, and engineering. Despite its practicality, nylon production has raised environmental concerns due to its significant carbon footprint, high energy, water usage, and non-biodegradable nature. In response, recycled nylon has emerged as a more sustainable alternative, addressing the ecological challenges posed by virgin nylon production.

Production of Recycled Nylon
Producing recycled nylon utilities an eco-conscious and sustainable approach. The process starts with the gathering of discarded nylon materials, encompassing old fishing nets, fabric remnants, and industrial waste. This becomes especially pertinent in the context of the staggering annual production of over 430 million tons of plastic on a global scale, with a significant two-thirds of this volume being composed of short-lived products that rapidly become waste. Experts highlight the alarming presence of highly hazardous marine plastic within abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear, which poses a severe threat to roughly 66% of marine species. Subsequently, these collected materials undergo a meticulous cleaning and sorting process, ridding them of impurities and contaminants. Once purified, the nylon is melted and extruded into new fibres, which can be used to create various products, including clothing, carpets, and industrial materials. Recycling nylon not only reduces the demand for virgin nylon, but it also minimises the environmental impact therefore decreasing the need for raw materials and energy-intensive production processes. The end result is an essential step in the journey towards a more eco-friendly and circular economy.

Is Recycled Nylon Stretchy?
Contrary to beliefs, Recycled Nylon is stretchy. This is due to its inherent molecular structure. It is a synthetic polymer made up of long chains of repeating units that are flexible and capable of sliding past one another. This characteristic allows nylon to stretch when subjected to tension and then return to its original shape when the tension is released.
