How to Dress Stylishly as a Mature Man: A Neem Summer Style Guide

A summer style guide for dads and grown men: effortless wardrobe essentials that look sharp, feel easy to wear, and are made with a lower carbon footprint.

Especially dads, or men in their 30s, 40s and beyond, where style starts to shift. You don’t want to look like you’re trying to dress younger. You don’t want to feel overdressed for everyday life. And you don’t want getting dressed in summer to feel like a daily negotiation.

This is where “dad style” starts to change. Modern dad style isn’t about dressing down, it’s about dressing with ease and confidence. To explore this in real life, we spoke with Neem friend and customer Jonathan Burton, who shares his perspective on confidence, identity and how dressing well changes as you get older, especially through moments like fatherhood and personal change.

This guide builds on that conversation. A summer uniform for grown men and modern dads, built around repeatable, breathable pieces that make getting dressed simple again.

Not a trend. A system.

What Makes a Good Summer Uniform?

A good summer uniform is built on clarity. Not more clothes, better ones. Pieces that work across different moments of the day without needing to be reconsidered each time you wear them.

For most grown men, it comes down to a few simple principles:

1. Breathable fabrics
Summer dressing fails when clothes work against you. The foundation is fabric that moves with heat, not against it, merino wool, lightweight cotton, open-weave constructions.

2. Versatility over occasion
A shirt that works at the desk and at dinner. A blouson jacket you can throw on in the morning and forget about. Clothes that don’t require planning.

3. Repeatability
The goal isn’t variety, it’s reliability. When everything works together, getting dressed becomes instinct, not decision-making.

Key pieces of a summer uniform usually look like:

+ Oxford cloth button down shirts
+ short sleeve merino polos
+ lightweight overshirts
+ High quality merino t-shirts
+ lightweight blouson jackets

Simple pieces. Worn often. In rotation.

The Return of the Blouson Jacket

Somewhere between 90s dads and European menswear, the blouson jacket has quietly returned. It works because it doesn’t try to do too much. The best men's casual jacket.

Lightweight, easy to throw on, and adaptable across changing temperatures, it sits in that space between formal and casual without committing to either. Wear over a tee, polo or vest on the warmer days. A simple layer for a more relaxed way of dressing.

Why Grown Men Repeat Outfits

The best-dressed men rarely rely on constant change. They rely on consistency. Not because they lack imagination, but because they’ve found what works. For example below show 2 ways to style the merino shirt. By simply changing which buttons are fastened or adding a bandana can change a look from elegantly casual to clean modern. It's the same piece but small changes based on what the outfit is needed for.

Over time, repetition becomes a form of confidence. You stop experimenting for the sake of it. You start dressing with intention. And often, as men get older, this becomes more natural.

Neemsayer Jonathan Burston on Dad Style, Confidence and Dressing After Divorce

Jonathan Burston, a real customer that has become a friend of Neem, gave us a few personal insights on how he approaches style as a dad. Jonathan also has a tiktok that focuses on navigating divorce and finding yourself, check that out HERE.

What is dad style?

“I think for me it means being able to look stylish, comfortable and confident in clothes. And looking a little bit different to stand out, as opposed to just being run of the mill.”

What do you think the role of a dad looks like today?

“Somebody who is comfortable in themselves, being a team to support your children.
Caring, compassionate. Control when you need to be and coach when you need to.”

How has your style changed as you’ve gotten older?

“I’ve become more confident in what I wear now compared to actually just trying to fit in previously. So now it’s very much about: do the pieces hang together? Do I feel good about myself?

I feel much more at home in who I am, so that makes it easier not to care what other people think.”

How did your relationship with style change after divorce?

“One of the things about divorce is your identity is often wrapped up in that relationship and therefore separating the two things, you then have to find your own identity again. So it became: what do I feel comfortable in? What do I want to look like? Who am I?

Actually one of the biggest changes is I have less pieces which I rotate more often.”
